Antioxidants
Mayzo provides a variety of antioxidants, which are useful to protect
adhesives, lubricants, plastics, elastomers, and coatings from oxidation
during high temperature processing and/or exposure to elevated temperatures
during end-use. Antioxidants are subdivided into chemical families having
different performance characteristics, including phenolic antioxidants,
metal deactivators, amine antioxidants,
phosphites, thiosynergists, and hydroxylamines.
Blends of different kinds of antioxidants are often used in order to provide
optimal performance.
Phenolic Antioxidants
Hindered phenols are the most widely used antioxidants and are highly effective in an extensive range of applications. They function as free radical scavengers and provide protection during high temperature processing operations and also during end use at elevated temperatures. Combinations of phenolic antioxidants with phosphites and thiosynergists are often used.

Metal Deactivators
Metal deactivators are special phenolic antioxidants containing functional groups that enable them to complex with and deactivate metal ions, which can accelerate the oxidation of plastics. They are widely used in wire and cable insulation applications to protect plastics from exposure to metals such as copper during end use.

Phosphite
Phosphite antioxidants function by decomposing peroxides and provide protection to adhesives, plastics, and coatings during high temperature processing but not during end-use at elevated temperatures. Combinations with phenolic antioxidants often show synergistic performance and are widely used.

Thiosynergist
Thiosynergists also function by decomposing peroxides. When used in combination with phenolic antioxidants, they provide unsurpassed protection to plastics against exposure to elevated temperatures during end-use. However, they are generally less effective than phosphites in providing protection during high temperature processing operations.

Hydroxylamine
Hydroxylamines are powerful antioxidants that can function both as free radical scavengers and as peroxide decomposers. They provide excellent processing stability to plastics while producing less discoloration (especially on exposure to combustion gases) than phenolic antioxidants. Combinations with some hindered amine light stabilizers (HALS) can also provide good protection to plastics against exposure to elevated temperatures during end-use.
