Optical Brighteners

Optical brighteners, or fluorescent whitening agents, are used to make plastics, fibers, coatings, inks, and detergents appear whiter and brighter. These products function by absorbing invisible ultraviolet light and re-emitting it as visible light in the blue range of the spectrum. The absorbance and emission spectra of the optical brightener Benetex OB are illustrated in the figure. These products are particularly useful to mask the yellowish cast sometimes observed in plastics and fibers after high temperature processing operations. They are also used in substrates containing pigments or dyes to make colors appear more brilliant. Note: Please see the Custom Optical Brightener Applications Examples at the bottom of this page

Benetex OB Plus – ultra fine powder

Benetex OB-D – pre-dispersed in customer-designated dispersants

Mayzo has a family of Optical Brighteners (OB) for use in adhesives, coatings, inks and sealants. Optical Brighteners are used:

- to increase whitening/brightening of white or clear coatings, sealants and inks
- as a tracer to QC coating thickness of adhesives and coatings
- to provide a fluorescent effect or security feature on labels

Mayzo Custom Solutions – Application Examples:

Benetex OB Plus an ultra-fine particle size product is used in plastisol screen printing ink, in order to eliminate the need to mill the OB, ( in order to disperse the product more easily during manufacturing.) Mayzo provides tight quality control to help ensure that customer’s achieve process efficiency. Customers can save 8-24 hours, by not having to mill. This represents a huge savings through increased productivity. Also, their screen printing customers’ need a fine particle size to prevent screen blockage. Therefore, Mayzo’s Benetex OB PLUS ultra-fine particle size, can offer our customer’s customer, the screen printer, a benefit in productivity by decreasing screen cleaning.

A customer who manufactures acrylic clear coat and sells to printing companies, requested that Mayzo provide a Mayzo Custom Solution of Benetex OB dispersed in their acrylic monomer. Typical coating systems are combinations of monomers, oligomers, UV photo-initiators and additives used in combination to achieve the desired performance properties.

The dispersions that we currently offer are based upon TMPTA This pre-dispersed OB comes in a ready-to-use customer specific dispersion, to save even more time by not having to mix and disperse the OB during manufacturing and can therefore increase clear coat manufacturing productivity.
