A New Technology for Modifying the Properties of Polypropylene to Produce Novel Products and Reduce Product Cost
Abstract:A new additive technology has been developed that allows the end-use processor to make conventional rigid and flexible PP products that are lighter weight and stronger than similar products made using unmodified PP resins. This technology is based on changing the crystal structure that develops when the molten polymer cools. The improved properties of the products produced opens the possibility of achieving significant down-weighting resulting in both cost and raw material savings. In addition, this new technology has been used to produce unique oriented film, thermoformed, rotomolded, and extruded products with enhanced functionality and added value. This presentation will describe the application areas where this technology has been used and give specific examples that highlight the benefits that have been achieved.
ANTEC 2009 Paper Submission
The Use of Beta Nucleation to Improve the Impact Strength and Reduce the Warpage of Polypropylene Caps & Closures
Abstract:We have developed a unique masterbatch that can be used to produce polypropylene caps and closures containing the beta crystalline phase of PP. These caps exhibit dramatically improved impact strength without a significant loss of other desirable physical properties. Another benefit of beta-nucleated closures is improved dimensional stability and reduced warpage. The masterbatch can be added during molding of the closures by blending pellets of the masterbatch with that of the PP resin, and no pre-compounding is required.
